What is a Licensed Paralegal?
In Ontario, Paralegals who hold a P1 Licence have the right to provide legal services to the public within specified areas of practise. A few of these areas include:
Small Claims Court
Human Rights Tribunals
Insurance Benefit Claims
Landlord and Tenant Tribunals
Provincial Offences
Bill 14 Access to Justice Act was passed in Ontario in 2006, allowing Paralegals to become recognized professionals within the legal services community. Presently, The Law Society of Ontario is the legislative body which governs Licensed Paralegals.
As members of the Law Society of Ontario, Licensed Paralegals must abide by strict rules of professional practice, conduct, and ethics.
